Well, this online journalism class, and Rowan for that matter, has been fun. I’m graduating in a week and unfortunately must inform you that I will no longer continue my blog. I don’t LOVE it but I don’t hate it either. I’m going to leave it up to hopefully inspire all you future bloggers!

Best,

Joelle

Day n’ Night 05/06/2009

At Rowan University, fashion varies from person to person, day to day. When most kids sit in class all day, they sport comfortable clothes to help withstand the annoying and uncomfortable feeling of sitting for hours. But on the weekends, students attire changes. From day to night, is like black and white when it comes to what they are wearing.

Strolling through the Campus Crossings off-campus apartments, I ran into Megan Baroody, 20, a Junior English major here at Rowan. She was sporting the ripped jean look with a cute baby-tee. Her hair was in a pony tail and bangs held back with a headband. Her makeup, simply eyeliner.

Q: So what made you chose to wear this outfit?

A: I try to look semi-decent on the weekends. I mean, we all have rough nights and a lot of times people just roll out of bed and put the first thing they see on. I try to take a little pride in my appearance. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy, but you never know who you’re going to run into!

I completely agree! She looks adorable, despite my previously stated feelings about ripped jeans, it’s a good look for her. The flip flops tie the whole look together as a cute but laid-back outfit, perfect for the hangin’ around on the weekend. Just a little eyeliner works out well. Not trying too hard but acting like you care what you look like is the best look.

Next I noticed some guys rough-housing around in the courtyard. They were playing rugby? I know nothing about the sport, but it looked fun! This is Anthony Boccia, 21, a Rowan senior. He plays club rugby and plays everytime he gets a chance.

Q: Is this how your daytime weekend attire usually looks?

A: Oh, absolutely! There is no other way to dress, its all about being comfortable and ready for anything. We always keep ourselves busy playing rubgy or tossing a baseball, so you dont want to be sitting on the couch in jeans and a nice shirt when the guys wanna play.

Anthony has a great look. He is comfortbale but is still wearing a stylish shirt that goes well with the shorts. Even though you do find most guys running around getting dirty and sweaty during the warm weather, it’s still refreshing to see they care a little about what they look like!

cimg0666Later on my journey I ran into Janine Clemente, 21, also a Rowan senior. She caught my eye in her adorable pink sundress and half pulled-back hair.

Q: I love your dress! Why’d you chose to wear that today?

A: Well thanks! I’m all about looking decent but comfortable. Dresses are perfect for that. You can look like you actually tried to look good but really it’s so easy, just throwing on one piece of clothing. And they’re definately really comfortable, and work well with getting some color, if the sun would ever come out!

I couldn’t agree with her more! She looks great and well put-together, and the look is so simple. The flip flops are perfect for sundresses and the warm weather. They also help to dress down the look a bit and make it perfect for hangin around on the weekend!

cimg0664I started to get a little hungry and decided to go to Nick’s Pizzeria in Glassboro for some lunch. There I ran into Steve Williams, 19, a Rowan freshman.

Q: I take it you have a lot of pride in your school! Is that why you wore this today?

A: (Laughs) I mean sure, I love Rowan but I can’t say thats why I wear it. I play football and am proud of that but to be honest, this was the first thing I grabbed in my drawer! The shorts too.

Well there you have it! The guide to how every guy gets dressed in the morning. But actually, Steve really pulled it off today. I think he looks great in this outfit. He is reppin’ Rowan yet managing to look halfway decent with his choice of wearing khaki shorts. This look gets an A!

When day turns to night on the weekends at Rowan, so does the attire. I went out over the weekend to see exactly what everyone was wearing!

ryannnjackieI ran into these 2 adorable girls getting ready for a night out in Philly. Ryann Reynolds and Jackie Lautato, both 21 year old Rowan seniors.

Q: You girls look great! How’d you decide what you were wearing tonight?

A: Jackie: Thanks! Well we are definately into dresses. The weather is getting warm and summer is just around the corner. Plus, I LOVE shoes and wearing a dress definately helps to show them off! I am so over wearing jeans that hide them.

A: Ryann: When you’re in Philly everyone is dressing to impress. It’s all about looking better then the girl standing next to you (laughs). Thats why I like wearing something flashy or something that stands out.

I couldn’t agree more with these girls. I think they look absolutely great and ready to hit the Philly night life. I love the dresses, they are really original and not the simple short black dress that every other girl wears. Ryann does stand out with her shiney dress but the dark colors make it so it’s not as over-bearing. And Jackie’s dress is cute but sexy she looks great without looking like she is trying too hard.

chelsea1At a party in off-campus housing, Beau Rivage, I spotted Chelsea McCann, 21, a Rowan junior and had to talk to her!

Q: You look great! What inspired this look?

A: Well thank you! As you can probably guess I don’t really have the average 21 year old, college girl style. I like to be me and being me means being different, because trust me, I am! I’m not sure if I’d call it inspired but I just have a different eye for clothes then everyone else. I like to take risks and try new things. Sometimes you get compliments, other times just weird looks. But either way, I do whats best for me and thats what counts.

I absolutely adored Chelsea. She definately didnt get a weird look from me. Her sense of style is all her own, and a great one at that. Too many times at Rowan you see the every night, jeans and revealing top look on most of the girls. It was definately refreshing to see someone who knows what she likes and is not afraid to show it. Rock on Chelsea!

Let there be MAC! 04/21/2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — joellemarie @ 12:19 pm

Throughout my blog I have been mentioning MAC Cosmetics ALOT. It is my favorite makeup brand, not to mention the best :) . Their stores are packed with helpful cosmetic professionals to help you chose the right products, tools and shades just for you. I suggest you visit a MAC store A.S.A.P, because you don’t really know makeup until you’ve owned MAC. There are MAC stores, but most MAC stands can be found in malls, usually in department stores. Here is a map showing the MAC’s in our area!

On the Green 04/16/2009

I absolutely love green eyes, wish I had them! And if I did, this is what eye color I would wear. Much like blue eyes, brown, apricot, purple, plum and deep khaki help to bring out your eyes without overpowering and taking away from their beauty.

Deep forest green is one of my faves, because they are in the same color family, they brighten green eyes.

If your looking for a fresh new look for a night out, try gold, lime-green and any light shades of green. To go that extra mile, try purple!

So, according to my poll, most of you have brown eyes. But next on the list is blue! (luckyyyy) Ok, so here it is. The fact that you have blue eyes is enough to have them stand out. But for that extra pop browns, taupes and neutral colors are best. You don’t want to take away from the natural beauty of blue with crazy, bright colors.

But, if your craving for some color purples and plums look awesome! Since blue and purple are “cousins” in the color world, they have hues of each other and blend complement each other extremely well.

Just the other night, I saw this girl with amazing blue eyes. She was actually wearing blue eye shadow!  It looked amazing, but the blue must be at least two shades darker then your natural color, so the colors don’t compete with each other, try it out! ( I would if I could ) :(

****IMPORTANT MAKEUP TIP- Eye shadows should always match with your eye color, NOT your clothes!!!

As I was sitting around thinking of what post to do next, well what color eye actually, I began to wonder what people would want to read more. Since I know brown eyes are the majority, I then thought, what comes next? Blue? Green? I want to know!

There are many, many different eyeshadows, colors and ways to apply makeup. But, there are specific looks that help to bring out your natural eye color to its fullest extent. Over the next few weeks I’ll bring you all the tips! But for now, I’m going to start with the best, most beautiful color eyes, brown! (I have brown eyes obv.) Since the majority of the world has brown eyes, because they are dominant in humans, I figured it’s the best beginning. :)

When it comes to eye shadow colors: copper, bronze, champagne (soft pink with a touch of tan) brown (for a doe-eyed look), beige, and light shades of green are best for everyday looks.

I love to add funky colors for effect on an awesome time out on the town: tangerine, royal blue, hot pink and lime-green. Contrast colors make your big brown eyes pop!

At almost every place you can buy makeup, there are palettes of eye shadows made specifically for your eyes!

Ask Alyssa! 04/03/2009

When considering who to interview, I wanted to talk to a licensed beauty professional. And when I was introduced to Alyssa Kurdziel the other day, it had to be her. At just 20 years old, she is a certified beautician! So I quickly asked her some important questions.

Me: What school did you go to?
Alyssa: I went to Parisian Beauty Academy in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Me: After graduation, what are you certified to do?
Alyssa: After graduation, I am certified with my permit to work on clients in a salon setting doing tasks such as applying color, washing and cutting, blow drying, waxing and applying makeup under a licensed professional’s supervision. Then I have to take just one more test. It’s from the state of New Jersey and will make me a licensed professional who can perform every service that is provided at a salon.

Me: What advice would you give someone who wants to get into the field?
Alyssa: My advice is to simply work hard, if Cosmetology is truely what you want to do, you need to believe in it and believe in yourself. The profession comes with a lot of unfair stigmas, it’s not as easy as it looks.

Me: What the best beauty trick you learned?
Alyssa: The best beauty trick I learned, hmmm. I would have to say how to use a straightener. Sounds easy but there is many different things you can do with it such as curling and waving. Who knew! A “straightener” can “curl”! :)

Me: So, what is one makeup tool a girl can’t live without?
Alyssa: One makeup tool a girl can’t live without is definitely an eyelash curler. They’re the best thing ever created! It makes every eye look better and gives lashes to girls who didn’t think they had them!

Me: What’s your favorite product you use?
Alyssa: Hmm, there is so many! I’d have to say my favorite products are MAC eyeshadows. Any color, they’re all amazing!

Thanks Alyssa!

Sand to Reduce Stubble! 04/01/2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — joellemarie @ 5:15 pm

I recently heard another beauty tip and tried it out, it works!
With the warmer weather approaching that means fun in the sun, skimpier clothes and MORE shaving, UGH! But while you’re out at the beach or lake, before you leave for the day give your legs a quick rub down with sand, yes sand! When you get home to shower, shave your legs and you’ll notice an easier, smoother shave. Removing the dead skin helps the razor get closer and even helps your shave last longer.

If you don’t have lots of sand close by, or the time to travel to the beach for that matter, there are plenty of exfoliating products that contain sand! I recommend St. Ives Apricot Scrub. The jar lasts and lasts for under $6!

Broke and Have Nothing To Wear? 04/01/2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — joellemarie @ 4:26 pm

As I have stated before, I am the cliche dirt broke college student who still cares what I look like. After wearing an outfit on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday your Facebook page will surely be filled of tagged pictures of you stumbling around in your latest fashion. The problem here is, those pictures don’t go away, and even if it takes you 3 weekends to wear that shirt again, the pics are going to be right on the same page! It looks like you have 5 shirts that you wear over and over, such a drag :(

So in order to keep your style up-to-date and your Facebook looking like your wardrobe is endless, you must have a hefty stash of weekend clothes. No money you say? Here are some trendy places you could find shirts $5-$20!

Joyce Leslie

This is one of my favorites because they have the most adorbale stuff for cheap and it’s so close! Located right in the Collegetown Shopping Center on Delsea drive, its the perfect place for last minute shopping. I once bought a shirt here for THREE DOLLARS yes, THREE! I’ve spent more on a latte.

Charlotte Russe

I LOVE this store! They have such a different array of clothes from casual to dressy, denim and dresses, and even a kick ass shoe section. They have great jeans for $15-$30. And it’s conveniently located in the Deptford Mall!

Wet Seal

I’ve been shopping here since I was about 12. Wet Seal is a great store and always has fresh new looks. The tops range from about $17-$30, but you get what you pay for!
